Federal sentences are directly related to the type of drugs manufactured and the quantity as as well.  Meaning, that smaller amounts of drugs and drugs that are less dangerous end up with less Federal Prison sentences than greater amounts of drugs or more dangerous drugs. Nonetheless, Federal sentences are severe in that even the lowest category for marijuana provides the court with the authority to sentences up to 5 years in prison. The lowest category of cocaine, heroin or methamphetamine provides the court with the authority to sentence from 5 to 40 years. Furthermore, penalties substantially increase if it’s a repeat offense or a death or serious injury is involved.
